Longing and wanting are different. And longing is likely to keep us from our chosen destination.
Longing is desire in the form of despair. Its focus is what we don’t yet have, a feedback loop that lights us up with more longing every time our wish remains just out of reach. Our brain gets better at what it practices, and so it gets better and better at longing, not at actually obtaining the thing we long to have or do or create.
